Songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist Dan Lewis has been creating and performing original music in Asheville North Carolina since 1974, and has created and released 12 albums of original songs and music, including five albums of instrumental synthesizer soundtracks and a live performance CD of his instrumental music (“BOB MOOG LIVE!“ by Moog, Abbott & Lewis) with synthesizer inventor Bob Moog and keyboardist Michael Abbott, originally performed at the Asheville Art Museum on November 23rd, 1980, featuring Lewis’s original compositions. The Moog Foundation says it is the only existing recording of Moog actually performing music on his most famous invention. Perhaps best known for his songwriting, one of Dan’s songs about moonshiner Popcorn Sutton has over 78,000 plays on YouTube.
Other highlights of Lewis’s music career includes many performances with first generation Black blues musicians Walter & Ethel Phelps, direct organizational work and stage management with the Bele Chere festival since 1979, the Valentines Waltz dance events (1980-86) dozens of small concert productions at the Manor Inn, a live performance inside the Biltmore House and various music and technical projects with Madison County storyteller and old time musician Sheila Kay Addams. With decades of experience in both live and studio audio engineering, Lewis has arranged, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered multiple recordings for himself and other artists; his first LP “Towards the Light” has become a collector’s item, selling for over $100.00 each.
Lewis also creates his own album cover art.
He has composed music for local and regional dance and theater events, and was recently featured at an Asheville Fringe Music event at the Orange Peel in Asheville.
